Frequently Asked Questions
AMP and Shopify

  • What is AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages)?

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) are pages that have been built with a special set of HTML and Javascript that enabled them to load extremely fast while still retaining great functionality for users. AMP was invented by Google as a way to make the mobile web faster, and Google released the specification of how AMP pages must be built. AMP pages receive preferential treatment in search results, and receive a lightning bolt icon next to the page when users search on a mobile phone.

  • How will AMP help my business?

AMP provides mobile users with a clean, seamless, and blazing-fast experience across all mobile devices. AMP pages have been shown to increase e-commerce conversions and statistically rank higher in search results than non-AMP pages. Users also trust the lightning bolt icon that your AMP pages receive next to their search result snippet.

  • How does AMP help my Shopify store's SEO?

Google favors AMP pages, meaning that after your AMP pages are indexed, these pages are more likely to be positioned higher in search results. You'll also receive highly-detailed structured data so that your search result snippet contains information like pricing, availability, and reviews ratings, all from within Google itself. Combine this with a blazing-fast page-speed, and you have some killer SEO.

  • Why choose AMP by Shop Sheriff?

AMP by Shop Sheriff is the #1 recommended AMP app as evaluated by Google. We have more Shopify Plus brands using our app than any other AMP service. We have successfully AMPed over 10,000 shops and 20 million unique pages, and we've learned what it takes to create valid and high-performing AMP pages on Shopify. We recommend checking out all of the AMP apps and deciding for yourself, and we're confident that you'll choose us. If you see a feature available on any other app that isn't available on ours, let us know, and it's highly likely that it's either already available, or in the pipeline for development.

  • Can I control which parts of my store are AMPed?

Yes. This app lets you turn on and off AMP for each individual section of your store: products, collections, and blogs. Blogs and collections are available at the "Hobbyist" and "Company" tiers, respectfully. When activated, every item in that individual section (products, collections, or blogs) will be automatically AMPed. If you'd like to turn off AMP, you may do so with one simple click, inside the AMP dashboard.

  • Does the AMP plugin alter my original store?

No - your original store and store theme are kept exactly the same. AMP pages are completely separate from your original store's pages. AMP pages will be blazing fast and styled according to your specifications. Your original site will remain the same.

  • Will AMP work with my theme?

It is highly likely. AMP pages are completely separate from your original theme, and are customizable using our own theme editor. AMP pages don't interact with your original .liquid Shopify templates. With this app it is possible to activate AMP for only specific parts of your store, such as products, collections, and blogs. Therefore it is highly likely that your Shopify store is compatible with AMP. The major difference with AMP pages, however, is that third-party Javascript will not be functional. This means if you have plugins that cause things like popups or countdown timers, you won't be able to use these in AMP. This is a strict limitation set by Google themselves.

  • Will AMP work with Google Analytics or Facebook Pixel?

Yes. We work seamlessly with Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Facebook Pixel.

  • Can I use AMP pages in advertisements like Facebook Ads, Adwords, or Google Merchant?

Yes. AMP pages are usable in all forms of advertising and promotion channels. Advertising your AMP pages is encouraged.

  • Does this AMP my home page?

YES! We have an incredibly powerful AMP pagebuilder for your Home page, with all of the features of the native Shopify page builder PLUS more powerful functionality like being able put additional sections on your product pages.

  • Where are my AMP pages hosted?

Your AMP pages are hosted for free on a secure and extremely fast cloud provided by Amazon Web Services. Your pages are cached for instant-loading, and automatically updated whenever you make a change to your shop.

  • How do I know the AMP plugin is working?

You will know AMP is working when you see AMP pages being indexed in Google Search Console. If you haven't signed up, please do so. Search Console provides insights into the data that Google has about your shop. Indexed pages can then be found by using a mobile phone and searching for an indexed product. Remember that AMP pages show up in Google only when using a mobile device, so be sure to use one when you are validating that they exist on Google.

  • When will users see my AMP pages?

Users will see your AMP pages in Google search results only when using a mobile phone. This means that search results will show that little grey lightning bolt icon next to them when they are AMPed. In order to check if Google has indexed your AMPed pages, check your site in Search Console. User's will not see AMPed pages just by going to your original store -- the user must find your AMPed pages through a search engine. Keep in mind that your product (or collection, blog, etc) must be indexed before it shows up. You can verify if a page is indexed by using Search Console.

  • How long does it take for Google to index my AMP pages?

Indexing of AMP pages often begins within a couple days. In some rare cases the process can take a week or more to begin. Once you activate AMP, Google is notified that your pages exist, but it's up to Google on when they decide to index those AMP pages. You can track the progress of your page indexing in Search Console.

  • What do I need to do after activating the plugin?

Nothing - just make sure that your AMP pages look the way you'd like them to look. Google is notified that you have AMP pages immediately after clicking "Activate", and Google will decide when they'd like to index them.

  • Can I deactivate AMP pages?

Certainly - we provide an easy deactivation switch from right within the app.

  • How do I remove the code after uninstallation?

If you click "Unpublish" before uninstalling the app, then there won't be any code left on your theme. If you don't click unpublish, the removal process is super simple:

    1. Open your theme.liquid file
    2. Remove the line of code that reads: {% include 'shop-sheriff-amp' %}.
    3. Now remove the file snippets/shop-sheriff-amp.liquid.

That's the entirety of the code modifications we make to your shop.
