De-indexing AMP pages on Shopify

If you delete AMP, or unpublish AMP pages from your AMP "Page Visibility" dashboard, it may take some time for Google to de-index your already indexed AMP pages.  These AMP pages have been indexed by Google so de-indexing them, like any pages that Google has indexed, does take some time.  This is dependent upon how fast Google crawls your site, but typically you'll start to see pages removed from Google within a week.

If you are intending to de-index AMP pages, you may have already performed one of these steps, but here are the two options to make sure that AMP pages are no longer published, and that Google will de-index them.

Option 1 (with AMP uninstalled): Unpublish the AMP pages

If you are planning to uninstall, you should unpublish your pages from the AMP Page Visibility section.  This removes the <link rel="amphtml"> tag from your non-AMP pages, which will make Google de-index your AMP pages the next time it crawls your site and notices that this <link> tag is missing.

If you have already uninstalled the app, and you forgot to "Unpublish" your pages, you can follow our quick uninstallation guide.  This will be the equivalent of Unpublishing the pages, and the next time Google crawls your site, they will de-index your AMP pages.

Option 2 (with AMP installed): Unpublish & force 301-redirects

If you keep AMP installed, you can go a step further and force 301 redirects to make sure all your AMP pages now 301-redirect to the non-AMP version of the page.  This can be a further indicator to Google that you'd like your pages de-indexed as fast as possible, and it will make sure that your AMP links are still accessible, but that they redirect to the non-AMP version.  This requires that AMP still be installed, because the only way for the app to have access to your AMP pages is for the app to be installed.

First, unpublish your pages from the AMP Page Visibility section.  Next, in the "Custom Visibility" rules section, under "Products", select "Show only products with this tag", and enter a tag that is non-existent on your site, such as "does-not-exist".  This will mean AMP will 301-redirect any pages that don't have the tag "does-not-exist", which should be all of your products.  You can also un-check all of your Collections and Custom Pages to 301-redirect those.

Verifying that AMP is no longer active

Once you complete either Option 1 or Option 2 above, you can verify that AMP is no longer active.

  1. Enter your non-AMP (original) page URL in this validator here.
  2. Make sure that the tool does NOT say that there is a "linked AMP version". That result that you should NOT see will look like this:

If the validator does not show a button saying "SEE LINKED AMP VERSION RESULTS", then you can be sure that this page does NOT have AMP active, and that Google will be de-indexing those AMP pages once they crawl your site again.
